Ron Zacapa Black Label 23 Years
Ron Zacapa Centenario Black Label 23 Years – an exclusive top rum which received the Gold Award as the best rum in the world in 1998-2001, with 98 out of 100 points, and was even inducted into the “International Hall of Fame”.
The Black Label is the original Zacapa rum, which was bottled up to 2002 and basically accounts for the brand’s success. It was produced on the basis of thickened sugar cane juice (virgin cane honey) and laid down in white oak barrels for up to 23 years. Newer bottlings are now produced using the solera method.
The name “Black Label” was given to this rum because of its black label and the special woven bast fibre packaging. This sheath made of palm leaves is the trademark of Ron Zacapa and can still be found in the design of the bottles today. When Zacapa had not yet been acquired by Diageo, wrapping the bottle completely like this was common.
The Black Label 23 Years is extremely popular with collectors and is rarely offered for sale – therefore making it a real rarity. In terms of quality it far outshines the newer bottlings.
Its taste can be described as fruity-sweet with a long finish. The oak taste is very subtle. The colour of Black Label is reminiscent of dark amber.
Ron Zacapa is now owned equally by Industries Licoreras de Guatemala and Diageo, one of the largest spirit producers in the world. Zacapa Rum matures in the mountains at an altitude of over 2,000 metres and is stored in burnt-out bourbon oak casks. This is followed by a short period laid down in Spanish sherry casks, which gives the rum its special flavour.
